BRAZIL SMASHES IRON ORE EXPORT RECORDS IN DECEMBER, SURGING 24% YOY

In December, Brazil broke iron ore export records, reaching 39.65 million tons, a 24% YoY surge and the highest monthly level since 1997, according to the Secretariat of Foreign Trade (Secex). The shipments, valued at $3.5 billion, surpassed the previous record set in December 2015. Mining giants like Vale capitalized on elevated commodity prices. The average iron ore price was $88.5 per ton (FOB), a 36.6% increase from December 2022. Iron ore sales revenue matched oil shipments at $3.5 billion. Soybean exports, while reaching nearly $2 billion, experienced a slight decline due to reduced year-end availability after Brazil’s record crop in 2023.
