BRAZIL RECORDS $2.22 BILLION TRADE SURPLUS IN OPENING WEEK OF JANUARY

In the opening week of January 2024, Brazil achieved a trade surplus of $2.22 billion, spanning four business days, as reported by the Foreign Trade Secretariat (Secex) of the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade, and Services (MDIC). The surplus resulted from $6.15 billion in exports and $3.93 billion in imports during the period. Daily average exports witnessed a notable 48.5% increase compared to the same period the previous year, reaching $1.538 billion. This surge was primarily propelled by the extractive industry (+85.1%), agriculture (+54.3%), and manufacturing (+33%). Conversely, imports rose by 5.6%, totaling $984.17 million, with notable increases in manufacturing purchases (+9.8%) and a slight uptick in agriculture (+0.7%), while imports from the extractive industry declined by 35.1%.
