Brazil has enormous potential to expand the use of sugarcane biomass in the country’s energy mix. Over the period between 2023 and 2026, sugarcane biomass is expected to contribute 1,692 MW to the country’s renewable energy generation capacity, which is a growth of 3.1% through 31 concession projects. However, wind and solar sources will lead most of the increase in renewable energy capacity with 85.8% of the increase. The bioelectricity sector in the sugar-energy industry has potential for growth, but it depends on clearer policies and actions that promote the use of ethanol in the energy mix and reforms in the sector. Bioelectricity is a stable choice, making it a safe supplement to intermittent sources like wind and solar energy.
