Prumo, under the leadership of CEO Rogério Zampronha, has recently entered into a memorandum of understanding aimed at facilitating the production of green methanol from biogas at Açu Port in Rio de Janeiro state. The project will capitalize on the biomass generation potential from sugarcane in the northern region of Rio de Janeiro, where the port is located, to produce biomethane. As a by-product of sugarcane processing, carbon is obtained, which can be combined with hydrogen to generate methanol. The production of methanol through this method is considered environmentally friendly since the emissions produced throughout the biomass chain are mostly absorbed. Methanol is emerging as a potential solution for decarbonizing marine fuels, as the shipping industry currently accounts for around 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
