Brazil’s wheat milling sector grew 3% in 2024, processing over 13.19 million tons—an increase of 380,432 tons from 2023, according to Abitrigo. The growth, surpassing population growth, highlights wheat’s role in national food security and the sector’s resilience. Flour was primarily used in bakeries (30%), pasta (15.4%), and biscuits (11.9%). Around 50% of wheat processed was imported, with the North and Northeast regions heavily reliant on foreign supply, revealing a lack of local production. This underlines the need for better logistics and policies to boost domestic output. The report also noted regional storage infrastructure challenges and called for financing to expand silo capacity, helping to retain national wheat during harvests and reduce import dependency.
