WHEAT IMPORTS ON THE RISE AS PRODUCTION DECLINES IN 2024

Farmers cut wheat production in 2024 following four years of area expansion. Field losses and devaluations over 2023 reduced profitability, which affected the producer’s plans to increase the area in 2024. On the plus side, production improved somewhat this year, keeping supply consistent with 2023. The demand remained strong, boosting imports. According to Conab, the harvest area for 2024 was 11.9% smaller than the previous year, reaching 3.061 million hectares. Productivity was estimated at 2,634 kg/ha, up 13% from the previous season. Thus, the 2024 harvest is expected to yield 8.064 million tons, a 0.4% reduction over 2023.
