Dredging works for the outer channel of Babitonga Bay, providing access to the ports of São Francisco do Sul and Itapoá, are set to begin by December, after a license obtained this week. The BRL 333 million project includes the removal of 12.6 million m³ of sediment over a 13-month contract period. To extend the dredging’s efficiency, sediment “traps” will be installed in three critical areas to limit silt accumulation in the main channel. Half of the 2.5 million m³ sediment from these traps will be used to enlarge Itapoá’s beaches. The repair will allow larger cargo ships to navigate the channel.
