SOYBEAN HARVEST REACHES 5% OF THE AREA IN RIO GRANDE DO SUL

According to Emater-RS, the soybean harvest in Rio Grande do Sul reached 5% of the projected area for 2024-25, up from 1% the previous year but lower than the average of 8%. The drought is expected to cut harvest by 17.4%, with production projected at 15 million tons. Irregular rainfall helped some parts, while a lack of humidity and a hot wave worsened losses in the Northwest and Middle Plateaus. Excessive heat also resulted in pod opening and grain crushing in harvest areas. Many producers failed to sow at the perfect period, causing Emater-RS to cut the estimated planted area by 1.2%, to 6.7 million hectares. The drought reduced average productivity from 3,179 to 2,240 kg per hectare. The productive potential varies based on rainfall, sowing time, and cultivar characteristics.
