SENATE COMMISSION WILL DEBATE INCENTIVES FOR THE PRODUCTION OF BIOGAS AND BIOMETHANE

The Federal Senate’s Environment Committee (CMA) will discuss incentives for sustainable biogas and biomethane production from urban and agricultural waste, with a meeting date yet to be set. Senator Zequinha Marinho (Podemos-PA) highlighted three related projects under Senate review: two in the Infrastructure Committee (PL 327/2021 and PL 528/2020) and one in the Economic Affairs Committee (PL 1879/2022). These projects aim to accelerate energy transition and decarbonize natural gas production. Marinho emphasized the need to mitigate methane emissions, particularly from agriculture and waste, and to incentivize biogas and biomethane plants. Representatives from relevant ministries and industry associations will be invited to the hearing. Biogas and biomethane, renewable energy sources from organic material decomposition, can replace fossil fuels and reduce environmental contamination.
