SÃO PAULO SOARS WITH 9.2% GROWTH, OVERTAKING MATO GROSSO IN AGRICULTURE EXPORTS TO CLAIM TOP SPOT IN BRAZIL

With São Paulo’s agriculture exports rising by 9.2% to USD 22.69 billion, it became the top exporter in Brazil, overtaking Mato Grosso (17.3%) with 18% of national exports. The sugar-alcohol complex (USD 9.15 billion) led the increase; especially, sugar exports (+31.5% in value). Green coffee (+121.6%), beef (+39%), and orange juice (+27.5%) are also rather noteworthy. The five major categories – sugar, meat, cellulose, soybeans, and juices – reached 79.7% of the exports. With an 8.9% rise over last year, São Paulo’s agriculture trade surplus reached USD 18.45 billion. Though issues like drought abound, agriculture accounted for 43.5% of the state’s overall exports.
