RAILWAY PLAN TO CONNECT PORT OF AÇU MOVES FORWARD WITH ANTT REVIEW

The EF-118 railway project, set to link the Vitória-Minas line to the Port of Açu in São João da Barra, has advanced to ANTT review and is expected to reach Brazil’s Federal Court of Accounts before its auction in October, with operations planned for 2026. Estimated at R$6.12 billion, the first 170 km stretch from Anchieta to São João da Barra will require R$4.5 billion, including R$1.8 billion from Vale. However, failed negotiations between Vale and the government over concession resources leave funding uncertain, though Brasília insists it has alternatives. A second phase would extend the line to Nova Iguaçu, totaling 325 km under a 50-year concession. The railway is expected to reshape logistics for agribusiness in the Southeast and boost the Port of Açu, Latin America’s largest private port complex, already backed by R$22 billion in investments and expansion projects.
