PORTO PIAUÍ PROJECT COMES TO LIFE AND IS SET TO BECOME AN EXPORT HUB

After decades of delay, Porto Piauí — the long-envisioned seaport in Luís Correia, the only Atlantic-facing state without one — is finally moving forward with R$200 million in investments, about 10% of Piauí’s total budget. Initial works include dredging the access channel, preparing the terminal site, and building support infrastructure. Operations are set to begin by late 2025 with shipments of marine limestone and fertilizers, followed by iron ore exports in 2026, a sector that grew over 4,000% between 2023 and 2024. The port will initially handle vessels up to 5,000 tonnes through transshipment 15 miles offshore. A deal with Lion Mining is already in place, and future dredging will allow ships with drafts over 12 meters by 2027. A new cargo and container terminal is also planned in partnership with São Paulo–based CNaga Armazéns Gerais, which will invest over R$100 million.
