PORT OF SANTOS STUDIES TARIFF DISCOUNTS FOR EXPORTERS HIT BY U.S. TRADE MEASURES

Santos Port Authority (APS) president Anderson Pomini participated in a Joint Committee reviewing the “Brasil Soberano” plan, created to support exporters affected by recent U.S. tariff hikes. He revealed that APS is studying tariff discounts for exporters impacted by the measures. Pomini highlighted that the U.S. tariffs triggered a “cargo rush,” with record shipments of 17.4 million tonnes in July and 16.5 million in August, as producers hurried to export before higher costs took effect. The United States accounts for 12–15% of Santos Port’s total cargo, with coffee, cotton, sugar, and beef among the most affected goods. Pomini argued that the tariffs ultimately harm U.S. consumers by raising prices. He also noted that the issue has intensified diplomatic dialogue between Brazil and the U.S., recently reflected in a phone call between Presidents Donald Trump and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
