The Port of Açu in northern Rio de Janeiro is pursuing closer ties with critical mineral producers as demand rises with the energy transition. CEO Eugenio Figueiredo says the port is in talks with companies and governments in Minas Gerais, Goiás, Rio de Janeiro, and Espírito Santo, highlighting Açu as a potential export outlet. With ample space for expansion, Prumo Logística CEO Rogério Zampronha notes the port can build dedicated, contamination-free areas for minerals such as rare earths and copper. Açu already exports copper concentrate and hosts an iron ore terminal operated by Ferroport, whose sale Prumo is negotiating due to portfolio strategy. The port is also expanding its clean fuels hub, with projects for SAF, e-methanol, and bio-LNG expected to start production by 2028. Additionally, Açu is seeking new markets, including India, while navigating global trade uncertainties. It currently handles about 40% of Brazil’s oil exports.
