PORT COMPANIES PUSH FOR INCREASED PREDICTABILITY IN DREDGING INITIATIVES

Claudio Loureiro, executive director of Centronave, urged the Ministry of Ports and Airports for clearer investment plans in the port sector, especially regarding dredging and channel deepening. He highlighted $50 million in losses due to uncertainties and emphasized the industry’s capacity to fund projects. Loureiro criticized delays in container terminal bids and inadequate docking facilities, noting average cargo waiting times of 121 hours. Alex Ávila, Secretary of Ports, acknowledged the ministry’s focus on dredging and the importance of adequate facilities for cargo operations. He announced plans for the Port of Paranaguá’s access channel concession, aiming for a successful auction by April 2025. Flávia Takafashi from ANTAQ emphasized the need for adequate investments and the potential for tariff adjustments if services do not meet charges. The event underscored the industry’s concerns about environmental challenges affecting waterway concessions.
