Petrobras is considering reentering the retail fuel market, four years after its exit, due to concerns from President Lula and CEO Magda Chambriard over high fuel prices not reaching consumers despite wholesale price cuts. The company’s board will meet to evaluate changes to its 2026–2030 strategic plan, possibly including retail operations to improve price transmission and efficiency. It is unclear whether this would involve acquiring Vibra Energia—Petrobras’ former distribution arm—or taking a partial stake. Lula blames privatization and multilayered distribution for inflated prices and has criticized gas stations and state taxes. The Attorney General’s Office is also investigating anticompetitive pricing practices in the sector.
