MANUFACTURING HUB OF TROPICAL WHEAT

Embrapa Agropecuária Oeste (MS), in collaboration with Cooperalfa, is testing and is currently in the final stage of validation of 17 wheat varieties to enhance the output in Mato Grosso do Sul. The goal is to reestablish the state’s dominance in this sector, as it was in the 1970s and 1980s when wheat crops occupied around 400,000 hectares. This area is now barely 30 thousand hectares. According to Embrapa Agropecuária Oeste researcher Claudio Lazzarotto, “the goal is not to replace corn in the off-season, but rather to strengthen the production system by adding wheat in production, which is no longer sustained only with the soy-corn double.”
