LANDMARK PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP FOR BABITONGA BAY DREDGING PROJECT SIGNED

Santa Catarina’s government will sign a historic Public-Private Partnership (PPP) for dredging and deepening Babitonga Bay’s access channel. The R$ 300 million project will allow docking of 366-meter vessels, making it Brazil’s first port capable of handling such ships at full capacity. The initiative, a model for the national port system, enhances logistics, regional tourism, and coastal protection, using dredged sediment for beach replenishment—an unprecedented move in Brazil. Porto Itapoá, funding much of the project, expects increased cargo throughput. Deepening the channel from 14 to 16 meters will boost capacity to 16,000 TEUs, reinforcing Babitonga’s role in global trade and generating jobs.
