ITAGUAI PORT ESTABLISHES ITSELF IN 2024 AS A HUB FOR NEW PANAMAX SHIPS IN RIO DE JANEIRO

Increasingly, shipping companies opt to operate large vessels, the so-called New Panamax. These 366-meter-long ships offer high cargo capacity, enabling significant economies of scale by reducing operational costs per cargo unit. Moreover, they are more fuel-efficient and utilize advanced technologies that minimize pollutant emissions, meeting the growing maritime sector’s sustainability demand. In August 2024, the Port of Itaguaí achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first in Rio de Janeiro to receive a New Panamax-class container ship, measuring 366 meters long and 51 meters in beam, docked at its container terminal, Sepetiba Tecon. Since then, nine more vessels of this class have docked at the terminal, cementing the port’s reputation as a reference for operating large ships in Rio de Janeiro.
