HISTORIC DREDGING SIGNALS A TRANSFORMATION FOR BABITONGA BAY

The dredger Galileu Galilei has started an unprecedented BRL 333 million to deepen Babitonga Bay’s port channel. The project will increase the depth from 14 to 16 meters, allowing 366-meter ships to call at the ports of Itapoá and São Francisco do Sul by 2026. A key environmental benefit is the use of 6.5 million m³ of sand to widen 8 km of Itapoá Beach by up to 200 meters, creating the country’s largest beach expansion. The Port of São Francisco is investing BRL 33 million, while Itapoá is providing BRL 300 million, with the latter’s investment to be reimbursed through fees by 2037.
