The economic advantage of ethanol and a record 2023/24 harvest boosted biofuel sales in early 2024, raising its share to 26.3% of Brazil’s light fleet energy consumption in Q1, up from 17.7% in 2023, reports FGV’s Bioeconomy Observatory. This shift reduced the carbon intensity of the light fuel matrix, avoiding 14.9 million tons of CO2 emissions. This is the second-highest quarterly value since 2020. Anhydrous and hydrated ethanol accounted for 41.4% of light vehicle energy consumption, the highest in 12 quarters. Diesel B consumption rose by 3.6% in 2023, continuing into 2024. Increased biodiesel blend and improved energy-environmental efficiency reduced diesel’s carbon intensity from 80.4 to 79.1 gCO2eq/MJ.
