GLOBAL DEMAND FOR SUGAR IS EXPECTED TO GROW BY 16 MILLION TONS IN TEN YEARS, SAYS BP BUNGE

Brazil is poised to maintain its leading role in the global sugar market, as other major producers like India, Thailand, Australia, and Central American countries lack the potential to significantly boost production in the medium to long term, according to Luciana Torrezan, market intelligence manager at BP Bunge Bioenergia. Speaking at the 17th National Congress of the National Bioenergy Union (Udop), Torrezan noted India’s focus on its internal ethanol program limits its sugar export potential. Brazil, with favorable conditions for expanding sugarcane production, is well-positioned to meet the projected 1% annual growth in global sugar consumption. However, sustained growth depends on sugar prices remaining above production costs.
