CNA DISCUSSES ABOUT RICE MARKET AND CROP YIELD FORECASTING

On Wednesday 2, the Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil (CNA) discussed about the rice market and the temporary exemption from the Common External Tariff (TEC) for importing rice, which comes to an end on December 31. The measure was published during the rising prices for rice this year. Before the measure, the import rice rate outside Mercosul was of 8%. “CNA is against the maintenance of the tariff exemption, as rice crops may well enter into the market in early January-March, so the tariff exemption is not necessary to continue”, said Francisco Schardong, CNA’s representative of the State of Rio Grande do Sul (Farsul). According to Sérgio Roberto Gomes (Conab), price projection for the year 2020/21 considers upward factors, such as lower supply stocks, expansion of internal and external consumption, rising dollar and international market prices. On the other hand, downward factors are Mercosul competition, the largest North American crop, and the projection of a slight expansion of area in the next crop.
