CITIES HIT HARD BY SEVERE FLOODS CONCENTRATE 90% OF BRAZIL’S RIO GRANDE DO SUL EXPORTS

The recent heavy rains and floods in Rio Grande do Sul have significantly impacted its export-oriented cities, with nearly 90% of the state’s exports originating from affected areas. Rio Grande, a key exporting hub, is now grappling with flooding despite not initially being part of the state of calamity declaration. In 2023, these 337 municipalities collectively generated $19.6 billion in exports, with China as the top importer. Key exports include soybeans, tobacco, and poultry meat. The Public Ministry of Rio Grande do Sul is investigating the floods’ impact, prompted by a neighboring city’s state of calamity declaration due to an influx of displaced individuals.
