CABOTAGE SURGES BRAZIL’S NORTHEAST, HANDLING 60.7 MILLION TONS IN 2025

From January to December 2025, cabotage navigation handled 60.7 million tons at Northeast ports, surpassing the previous year’s total, according to the National Waterway Transport Agency. Activity was primarily concentrated in Bahia, Maranhão, Ceará, and Pernambuco, indicating the region’s expanding logistical integration. Minister Silvio Costa Filho stated that cabotage reduces costs, boosts efficiency, and ensures supply stability. The most common products transported were oil, containers, derivatives, bauxite, and iron ore. This expansion is due to the BR do Mar Program, which has increased regulatory certainty and strengthened the modal.
