BRAZIL’S SUGAR EXPORTS INCREASE 50% IN THE SEMESTER, SHIPMENT DATA SHOWS

Brazilian sugar exports surged by 50% in the first half of 2024, reaching 15.15 million tons. Indonesia was the top destination, receiving 12% of Brazil’s sugar, followed by India (9%) and the UAE (8%). Wilmar International led in chartering bulk sugar exports, accounting for 16%, followed by Alvean (15%) and Sucden (14%). Despite being a major importer, China ranked 11th, importing just 588 thousand tons. The rise in exports was fueled by large stocks from 2023 and an early start to the sugarcane harvest due to dry weather. Brazil is expected to produce less sugar in 2024, but strong shipments continued due to these factors.
