BRAZIL RAIL FREIGHT HITS RECORD 555.5 MILLION TONS IN 2025

Rail freight transport in Brazil reached a record 555.48 million tons in 2025, a 2.57% increase from 2024 and the third consecutive annual record, according to the Ministry of Transport. Growth was driven mainly by agriculture, whose rail shipments rose 4.62%, while iron ore remained the dominant cargo at 401.35 million tons. The government plans to further expand the network through eight rail auctions in 2026, targeting R$140 billion ($27.7 billion) in investments as part of a broader pipeline that could reach R$600 billion. Authorities say strengthening rail logistics will reduce transport costs, ease highway congestion, and lower emissions—particularly for long-distance routes such as grain shipments from Mato Grosso to southeastern ports.
