BRAZIL INVESTS R$ 380 MILLION IN ADVANCED VESSEL MONITORING SYSTEMS FOR KEY PUBLIC PORTS

Brazil’s Port System is undergoing a major technological upgrade, with 380 million reais allocated by the Ministry of Ports and Airports to implement the Vessel Traffic Management Information System (VTMIS) in key terminals such as Santos, Paranaguá, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande, Itaguaí, Itaqui and Vila do Conde, which together handle over half of Brazil’s public port cargo. The system will allow real-time monitoring of vessel movements and navigation conditions, improving decision-making, safety and operational efficiency while helping combat illicit activities through radar, cameras and sensors. Implementation is advancing at different stages across ports, with Santos nearing contract announcement and Rio de Janeiro progressing through phased deployment. Technical studies are also underway for additional ports. The initiative is part of a broader federal effort to modernize port logistics and align Brazil with global standards.
