BRAZIL EXPANDS THE AREA TREATED WITH PESTICIDES BY 10.5% IN 2023

In 2023, the use of pesticides in Brazil increased by 10.5% due to the expansion of planted areas and climatic conditions. A total of 1,424,588 tons of pesticides were used in 2023, which is 9.5% more than the previous year. Herbicides made up 47% of the total pesticide use, followed by fungicides and insecticides, each accounting for 22%. The total treated area was 2.240 billion hectares, with soybeans covering 55% of it. The pesticide market experienced a 1.9% growth, reaching a total value of USD 20.706 billion. Mato Grosso and Roraima together accounted for 27% of pesticide consumption. It is expected that there will be a 12.6% decrease in pesticide use for the 2023-24 harvest, while the treated area is expected to increase by 7.6% due to the rise of pests like the whitefly.
