AUCTION FOR LATIN AMERICA’S LARGEST IMMERSED TUNNEL SET FOR AUGUST 1; PROJECT VALUED AT R$ 6 BILLION

On February 12, the Brazilian federal government and São Paulo state signed an agreement to advance the construction of the Santos-Guarujá immersed tunnel. The R$ 6 billion project, set to be Brazil’s first submerged tunnel and the largest in Latin America, will improve commuter safety, reduce ferry congestion, and enhance cargo logistics at the Port of Santos. The tunnel will span 1.5 km, with 870 meters underwater, featuring three lanes in each direction and a Light Rail Transit (VLT) system. The project is part of the Growth Acceleration Program (PAC) and São Paulo’s Investment Partnerships Program (PPI-SP). Expected to streamline traffic and boost the region’s economy, it is seen as the most significant infrastructure project in the region’s history, with bidding scheduled for August 1.
