SOUTHERN BRAZIL’S PUBLIC PORTS MOVE 85.3 MILLION TONS JAN-AUG

Public ports in southern Brazil (Parana, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul) moved 85.3 million tons from January to August 2025, a 7.9% increase from the same period in 2024, according to Antaq. The Port of Paranaguá led the way, handling 43.9 million tons. Growth was primarily driven by a 21.1% surge in container handling and a 15.5% rise in general cargo. Exports increased by 4.9%, fueled by soybeans and corn, while imports grew 11.8%, led by fertilizers. In a related development, the Ministry of Ports and Airports held the first concession auction for the Paranaguá access channel. The project, which involves an estimated investment of BRL 1.2 billion over 25 years, will deepen the draft from 13.5 to 15.5 meters. This will allow larger ships to enter, boosting the port’s capacity and competitiveness.
