CORN PRODUCTION IS A HIGHLIGHT AND CROP SHOULD BE THE 2ND LARGEST IN HISTORY

The National Supply Company (Conab) has estimated that total corn production in the 2018/2019 season will reach 95 million tons. According to the entity, this is the second best result, behind only last year’s harvest of 80.7 million tons, which was compromised by climatic problems in the second harvest. With this, production is expected to rise 18%. The organization explains that the rains that occurred in the last months in the regions producing the second harvest of the grain, mainly in the Center-West, favored the result. “In addition to the favorable climate, throughout the crop cycle the producer was also able to fully enjoy the ideal crop window, since there was an anticipation of the soyabean harvest. With the performance, the trend is that the stocks of passage will rise, which should pressure the prices of the product in the market and may even fall below the minimum value determined by the government from the entrance of the second crop in the market, “said the director of policy and information from Conab, Guilherme Bastos. According to Conab, production of the first crop is expected to stand at 26.1 million tons, up from 26.8 million tons in the previous crop. This represents a decrease of 2.6%. However, this decrease in the summer harvest should be offset and even surpassed by the expectation of production of the second harvest. The projection is 69.1 million tons, against 53.8 million tons, representing an increase of 28.3%.
