According to the Sugarcane and Bioenergy Industry Union (Unica), Brazil’s Center-South region crushed 439,830 tons of sugarcane during the first half of January. Last year, there was no sugarcane crush in this period. Crushing totaled 542.09 million tons in the harvest of 2022–2023 as opposed to 522.62 million tons in the same period of the 2021–2022 cycle, an increase of 3.73%. Three units stopped crushing sugarcane in the first half of January. Thirteen manufacturing units were running in the Center-South region at the end of the two weeks, with three units processing sugarcane and 10 making ethanol from corn.
