RUSSIA PLANS TO TEMPORARILY HALT WHEAT EXPORTS

Following a dramatic decline in global prices over the last week, the Russian newspaper Vedomosti reported on Friday (24), citing two sources who attended a meeting with the government, that the Eurasian nation may temporarily ban wheat and sunflower shipments. According to the newspaper, the Russian Ministry of Agriculture will meet with sector representatives this week to go about potential shipping restrictions. The Kremlin had previously declared that it intended to increase grain purchases to 10 million tons for its reserve fund. Russia’s federal statistics office, Rosstat, revealed this week that the country’s wheat production increased 36% to 104.2 mt.
