Fires in Brazil’s Center-South sugarcane fields in 2024 caused major losses, prompting increased prevention efforts. Mills are investing in technology, such as AI-equipped cameras and satellite monitoring, to detect and combat fires more effectively. The Lins plant, managing 75,000 hectares, expanded its AI camera network, while Caeté installed long-range cameras linked to São Paulo’s police system. Tereos uses meteorological satellites to assess fire risks, having lost R$100 million in 2023. Over 414,000 hectares burned in São Paulo, with most fires starting near highways. The state government is intensifying fire prevention with equipment deliveries and educational programs.
