Mato Grosso do Sul produced a record 4.2 billion liters of ethanol in the 2024/25 harvest, maintaining its position as Brazil’s fourth-largest producer. Despite a 5.1% drop in sugarcane processing (48.5 million tons), ethanol output rose by 10%, driven by corn ethanol, which accounted for 37% of production. Sugar output remained stable at 2 million tons. Biosul president Amaury Pekelman credited the growth to corn ethanol and the sector’s resilience. The 2025/26 harvest, starting April 1, is expected to see a 3.5% recovery in sugarcane crushing, with ethanol production rising to 4.7 billion liters (+11%) and sugar reaching 2.6 million tons (+30%). Mato Grosso do Sul has 22 bioenergy plants and employs 30,000 people, contributing 17% of the state’s industrial GDP. The sector is expanding with new investments and a broader product portfolio.
