The agricultural harvest of 2020 is expected to be a record, with an estimate of reaching 245.2 million tons, 3.7 million tons more than the performance of the previous year, indicating a growth of 1.5%. The data are from the Systematic Survey of Agricultural Production in January, released this Thursday (9/4) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). In relation to the prognosis for March, there was a 1.6% drop in the estimate for the harvest, equivalent to 3.9 million tons less, but the record forecast was maintained. The estimate of the area to be harvested this year is 64.3 million hectares, an increase of 1.7% compared to 2019, with an increase of 1.1 million hectares. In relation to the previous month, however, the area is 57.9 thousand hectares less, a decrease of 0.1%. Among the three main commodities, the highest increase in the area to be planted was seen in soybeans, with an increase of 2.4%, followed by corn, which will increase by 1.9%, with a 4.4% increase in the first harvest and 1% in the second. Rice, on the other hand, will fall by 1.6% in the area to be planted. Herbaceous cotton will increase by 1.1%, calculates the IBGE.
