The director of Antaq, Francisval Mendes, joined the 25th edition of Intermodal South America earlier this week in São Paulo. “By 2019, the Agency’s projection is for ports and terminals to move 1.156 billion tons, growing 3.5% compared to last year,” Mendes said. The director also pointed out that, in 2018, there was a growth of 13% in the transportation of containers by cabotage, in comparison with the previous year. 1,359 million TEU were transported by cabotage last year. In the period between 2010 and 2018, according to Mendes, the transport of containers in cabotage grew 146%. 49% of this transportation originates or is destined for the state of São Paulo, and 11% of the transportation of containers by cabotage takes place between São Paulo and Amazonas, which demonstrates the importance of this navigation for the economies of the different regions of the country. “Considering all kinds of cargoes, cabotage shipping handled 230.7 million tons last year, growing 3.75% compared to 2017.” Mendes also emphasized the long-haul navigation, which represents 74% of the total cargoes operated in the country. This type of shipping transported 824 million tons, registering a growth of 2.38% compared to 2017. Inland navigation, cargo handling doubled in the period between 2010 and 2018, going from 30 million tons to 60 million tons.
