BRAZIL SET TO REACH RECORD LEVELS IN THE NEW HARVEST DESPITE CLIMATE PROBLEMS

Although the National Company of Supply (Conab) says that climate problems have decreased November estimate, Conab endorsed the forecast of a new record harvest in Brazil, in the third survey of the 2020/21 grain harvest, released on December 10. According to the new estimate, Brazil will produce 265.9 million tons of grain in the 2019/2020 harvest – 9 million tons (up 3.5%). The projections also indicate a growth of 1.6% in the planted area, reaching 67 million hectares. For the 2020/21 season, soybeans and corn account for 89% of the country’s total grain production. Conab estimates an increase of 3.3% in soybeans planting, and a production projected to reach 134.5 million tons, placing the country as the world’s largest producer of oilseeds. Conab also estimates a drop of 2.1% in corn planting, and the country’s total production is estimated at 102.6 million tons. As for rice, the planted area is projected to grow by 3.2%, and production is estimated at 10.9 million tons, with 10 million tons coming from irrigated areas and 900 thousand tons from rainfed areas.
