According to figures from the Secretariat of Foreign Trade (Secex), Brazilian wheat exports totaled 2.47 million tonnes, outpacing the 2.40 million tonnes imported until the second-last week of May. In just five months, Brazil, which is traditionally one of the world’s leading cereal importers, exported more than double the entire volume of 2021. According to the content director of Canal Rural, Giovani Ferreira, the appreciated value of the dollar and the war between Russia and Ukraine are the main reasons for such growth. Also according to him, in addition to China, many Arab countries are buying Brazilian wheat. “Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Sudan, and Egypt. They imported 240 thousand tonnes during this period last year, while the volume this year has already surpassed one million tonnes,” he continues. The Brazilian industry consumes 12.5 million tonnes of cereal per year on average. In 2021, for example, the country imported 6.2 million tons. “Brazil is exporting so much that it will need to import more. Brazil will need to import approximately 8 million tonnes to meet the demand.”
