Dredging maintenance at the Itajaí-Açu River Port Complex resumed on October 8, according to the Port Authority. The NJORD dredger is initially handling sediment removal with powerful water jets, while a larger Dutch hopper dredger will soon arrive to store up to 18,000 cubic meters of sediment. Operating 24 hours daily, the dredgers will restore the channel depth to 14 meters and improve rainwater flow, reducing flooding risks. Services had been suspended since August due to a R$35 million debt owed to Van Oord. A new agreement resolved the debt, ensuring dredging continues until February 2026. Fábio da Veiga, the terminal’s superintendent, thanked the National Ports Secretariat, ANTAQ, and Portonave for financial support, as well as the Itajaí Port Captaincy and Pilots Association for maintaining safe operations during the suspension.
