After a decade-long hiatus, the Port of Cabedelo in Brazil has resumed sugar shipments, diverting traffic from the ports of Recife and Suape. The operation, which began on September 20th, involves exporting 20,000 tons of demerara sugar to Africa in two shipments of 10,000 tons each, with Japungu Agroindustrial as the cargo owner. This revival was made possible through investments by the Paraíba state government, which included warehouse renovations and channel dredging, increasing the depth from 9.14 meters to 11 meters. The port’s newly expanded capabilities are expected to attract more sugar producers to Paraíba, enhancing the region’s economic prospects. The recent investments, totaling R$115 million, permit larger vessels with up to 55,000 tons of cargo to operate, representing a potential 57% increase in cargo capacity.
