OCEANS, REPRESENTING UP TO 6% OF GLOBAL ECONOMY, ENTER G20 DEBATES

The G20 has formed the Oceans 20 (O20) group to emphasize oceans’ role in economic, social, and environmental sustainability. Under Brazil’s presidency, the O20 focuses on sustainable development and international cooperation for ocean conservation. The O20 aims to ensure a “Blue Economy” by discussing climate impact, high seas governance, pollution, and coastal livelihoods. The ocean economy is projected to add $3 trillion and create 40 million jobs by 2030. Priorities include addressing climate change, social equity, ocean conservation, technological advancement, and global governance. The O20 will present recommendations to the G20, advocating for the High Seas Treaty and emphasizing Marine Spatial Planning.
