NATIONAL FERTILIZER PLAN SHOULD BE LAUNCHED ON MARCH 29, SAYS SECRETARY FOR STRATEGIC AFFAIRS OF THE PRESIDENCY OF THE REPUBLIC

The National Fertilizer Plan, announced in 2021 by Minister of Agriculture Tereza Cristina, is due to be launched on March 29. The information was given by the secretary of strategic affairs of the Presidency of the Republic, Admiral Flávio Augusto Viana Rocha. The plan aims to expand domestic production to reduce the strong dependence on imported inputs for the manufacture of fertilizers. The secretary also detailed the objectives and challenges related to the Plan, whose central goal is to reduce Brazil’s dependence on imported fertilizers from 85% to 60% by 2030. “It is worth emphasizing our external dependence on the three main items that make up the universe of fertilizers: nitrogen, 80%; phosphate, 55%; and a negative record in potassium, of 95%”, highlighted Flávio Rocha. The secretary added that, in the last ten years, despite not showing significant progress in planted area, the increase in productivity in Brazilian agriculture was closely linked to the consumption of fertilizers. “From 2010 to now, our demand for fertilizers has grown by 66% and Brazilian production has decreased by 30%”, he emphasized.
