The Technical Chamber of Agricultural Inputs (CTIA) launched the National Fertilizer Plan with the goal of reducing Brazil’s reliance on fertilizers from 80% to 50% by 2050. Arlindo Moura, the president of the Chamber, claims that because the deposits are deep and, particularly, in the area of the Amazon Forest, fertilizer manufacturing in the country is either expensive or impractical. “Due to logistics and location, exporting fertilizer is more expensive than importing it. Yet, there is general agreement that we should produce to some amount in order to be less dependent on imports”, he said. The plan suggests a number of outcomes, including expanding the range of sustainable products and technological processes, training experts in the field of fertilizers, encouraging product efficiency, and raising by 100% the biological fixation of nitrogen in soil through agronomic methods.
