JANUARY EXPORTS KEEP THE SPIRITS HIGH IN THE RICE INDUSTRY

According to the Brazilian Rice Industry Association (Abiarroz), 2022 began with a positive outlook for Brazilian rice on the international stage, with two European countries, Spain and Portugal, among the most important import markets (14). In January, rice exports (husk base) totaled 84,200 tonnes compared to 09,800 tonnes shipped in the same month last year. Revenue totaled US$44 million, compared to US$9.5 million in the first month of 2021, says Abiarroz, based on data from the Ministry of Economy. In addition to Spain and Portugal, four other countries stood out in terms of purchases of Brazilian rice in January: Costa Rica, Peru, Senegal, and Venezuela. “Exports of processed rice, particularly to Peru, drove revenue up 400%,” says Carolina Telles Matos, Abiarroz Exports manager. The rice market should be more heated this year in Carolina’s assessment.
