Former minister and current president of the Brazilian Mining Institute (Ibram), Raul Jungmann, said that the fertilizer sector is strategic and a challenge to national security. “Even as an agricultural power, agribusiness has been found to have ‘feet of clay’ regarding the conflict in Ukraine and its dependence on imported fertilizer. As warehouses of the world, we cannot remain so fragile in this matter”. He also pointed out the change in production chains because of the pandemic and the war in the Black Sea. “Brazil has room now to expand not only agriculture but the mineral sector”, said Jungmann. “But for that, we need to fix the weaknesses.” The former minister mentioned the need to expand the country’s geological knowledge, which could be through a public-private partnership.
