CORN-BASED ETHANOL BOOSTS CORN PRODUCTION CHAIN IN BRAZIL

The Gross Value of Agricultural Production (GVP) of corn has registered an increase of 108% in the last five years, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa). The amount is estimated at R$ 156.62 billion in 2022, an increase of 21% when compared to 2021. “In the Center-West region, we have a huge production and little demand for corn. However, with corn-based ethanol production, the producer started to see an appreciation in the price of corn, which fostered investments in the production of the grain”, said Guilherme Nolasco, the executive president of the National Corn Ethanol Union (Unem). Investments become more attractive with market and price predictions. Corn ethanol production in Brazil increased from 0.52 million cubic meters (m³) in the 2017/2018 crop to 2.65 million m³ in the 2020/2021 crop, with 82% of this production in the state of Mato Grosso.
