BRAZILIAN SENATE POSTPONES VOTE ON BILL TO REGULATE PILOTAGE ACTIVITY

The Brazilian Senate Infrastructure Committee has postponed the vote on bill PL 877/2022, authored by Senator Nelsinho Trad, which deals with regulating pilotage activity in the country. A meeting was held on Tuesday, but it lacked the necessary quorum. No new date for voting on the matter has been announced. Trad justifies that the objective is to “regulate relevant aspects of the pilotage activity in the country.” Trad proposes that the Maritime Authority regulate all necessary qualifications for conducting pilotage, as well as establish parameters in terms of remuneration to establish the number of professionals year after year. The proposal also includes regulations for individuals who want to participate in the selection process for the pilot practitioner category. Additionally, after completing 20 years of service, pilots would be granted the same level of precedence and equivalence as the long-haul captain category in the Merchant Navy.
