Maritime operator Aliança Navegação e Logística is building the first two ocean-going container barges in Brazil. A.P Moller-Maersk owns the company. The project, initiated in December 2021, foresees the construction of two tugboats at the Rio Maguari shipyard in Pará, with delivery expected by 2024. The investment will total BRL 300 million. The barges will have the capacity to transport 700 TEUs. Each TEU is equivalent to a 20-foot container. The new Brazilian barges and pusher crafts are designed to operate in the open sea. Their capacity to transport containers is approximately four times more than those currently employed in Brazil, according to information from Maersk. Container vessels are typically manufactured outside of Brazil, especially in China and South Korea, where delivery is faster, and costs are lower. Building them on Brazilian soil is a milestone for the Brazilian shipbuilding market.
